November is finally here, and before you start preparing for your Thanksgiving plans, make sure you put down the shaving cream for No-Shave November!
What is No-Shave November?
No-Shave November helps raise awareness for men battling prostate and testicular cancer by encouraging participants to go the entire month of November without grooming, or shaving. You can also donate or get others to donate through their own No-Shave November fundraising page.
The goal is simple; grow your beard to help raise awareness. No-Shave November’s nonprofit organization was created in 2009 after the passing of the beloved father of eight, Matthew Hill, in 2007 from colon cancer. The No-Shave November organization has partnered up with cancer foundations such as the American Cancer Society, Prevent Cancer Foundation, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to help spread awareness of men’s mental and physical health, as well as start a conversation around cancer awareness.
Want to Participate?
If you want to get in on the fun, ditch the razor and embrace the hair! Start with a fresh face at the beginning of November, and donate the money you would have spent on razors or barber visits to the No-Shave November organization.
However, it might be easy to get wrapped up in the beard talk to remember why No-Shave November is a crucial movement for men’s health, and that’s because it creates a dialogue among men and the significance of going to the doctors and getting checked.
So don’t forget to donate, and post your No-Shave November journey on your social media platforms and use the hashtag #NoShaveNovember, to help encourage people to join the movement or to link to resources that are accepting donations to support the cause. You can even chart your progressive and money you have raised by registering with the organization!
The Rules of No-Shave November
There are four main rules you need to follow for a successful No-Shave November.
(1) Start the month with a clean-shaven look, this will set the tone for the rest of the month and will help your beard grow in evenly.
(2) Trim if needed. If your profession does not allow for unkempt facial hair, then trimming is acceptable.
(3) Do not shave! No shaving might seem like an obvious rule, but with most family gatherings happening in November, it might be tempting to lose the beard, but you must stay strong!
(4) Don’t forget to donate. Whether the donation is big or small, remember it is all going to a great cause.
Impact on Men’s Health
No-Shave November helps raise awareness around men’s mental and physical health, prioritizing early detection and prevention. While attempting to normalize prevention and educate men on how it can lead to a significant difference in their health, researchers found that men are 24% less likely to have visited a doctor annually than women.
This showcases that while women tend to be more health-conscious, men struggle to make their health a priority. Testicular cancer is the most common cancer among men 15-49 years old, and prostate cancer is the second most common cancer found with men. Participating in No-Shave November is just one way you can help raise funds for cancer research and programming.
Embrace Your Scruff
Having trouble maintaining well-kept facial hair? Don’t let that stop you from joining in on the No-Shave November fun; just keep in mind that each stage of your beard’s growth will require a different approach when it comes to upkeep.
In the early stages, you are going to want to wash it regularly with a beard shampoo, while toward the end of your beard journey, you are going to want to preserve your natural oils by washing it twice a week. If your beard is on the thinner side and difficult to style, don’t worry. Not every man can grow facial hair or facial hair that looks good at every stage, so if you find yourself struggling to make your beard work, try styling it to compliment your hairstyle or face shape.
Or, if you have a fuller beard but balding scalp, take a prescription hair-thickening medication like finasteride that can help your full beard transition more smoothly into a hearty head of hair. Just be sure that you’re matching your looks to ensure a cohesive and flattering bearded appearance.
103 Collection offers a good choice for an affordable beard oil. This vegan oil is perfect for the conscious gentlemen who wants to maintain a healthy lifestyle and beard. Packed with moisturizing ingredients including jojoba, tea tree and peppermint oils, this will help prevent dandruff and breakage while stimulating hair growth.
What Happens After?
November 30th marks the last day of No-Shave November, and if you’re not sure what to do with your glorious new beard, remember it’s entirely up to you! You could grab your favorite beard trimmer and say goodbye to your beard or head to your barber for styling, and use this as a jumping-off point for your beard journey!
Regardless if you love or hate your beard by the end of the month, your contribution to the No-Shave November movement has helped and educated so many people, while highlighting the importance of men’s health.
