    Ways to Keep Your Mental Health on Top Form

    We are all aware of the importance of taking care of our physical health. However, when it comes to our mental health, we can often put it on the backburner. With studies confirming the link between anxiety and physical health, it is super important to make mental health a priority. So, instead of putting your mental health to the back of your mind, try these techniques to ensure that you are feeling as good as possible.   

    Sleep 

    Good quality sleep can make a huge difference in the state of our mental health. It is just as essential as exercising and following a healthy diet when it comes to staying in top form. This is because bad sleep can lead to memory issues, weight gain, loss of motivation, and mood swings. To ensure you are getting enough sleep, maintain the same time for getting up and going to bed every day, minimize exposure to electronics two hours before bed, avoid strenuous exercise before bed, and eat sleep boosting foods like bananas and cherries. 

    Avoid alcohol 

    Alcohol might seem like the answer when you’re feeling stressed, but it can actually make you feel even worse the next day. Even just one or two drinks are enough to upset the balance of chemicals in the brain, so it is best to avoid it completely if you are experiencing a period of poor mental health.

    Eat a healthy diet

    Eating your way to good mental health is super important. Regularly eating fast or processed foods can directly impact the way you feel, so try to switch up your diet to include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables to ensure that your body is getting the nutrition it needs to be well. 

    Talking is the best way to get help 

    Take a break 

    Whether you take 5 minutes or two weeks, having a break from the day to day requirements of your life is an essential way to give your mind space to de-stress and recover. Just a few minutes can be enough to recharge your batteries and prepare you to face the rest of the day, so get into a habit of regularly making time for yourself. Keep a book with you to dip in and out of, take up meditation, or plug yourself into your favorite playlist and just relax for a few moments.

    Exercise your mind

    Just as the body needs physical exercise to feel good, so to does the mind need its exercise to stay sharp and healthy. It’s proven that challenging the brain with games like poker or chess creates new neurological pathways in the brain, which in turn helps to create a healthy central nervous system. This is one of the keys to maintaining good mental health.

    Talk

    It can be easy to bottle up your feelings and try to carry on in the hope that things will improve – but this is not an effective way to deal with stress or anxiety. Find the time to talk about how you are feeling with a trusted friend, family member, or professional. Getting your feelings out into the open will take a huge weight off of your shoulders and enable you to get some clarity and perspective on everything. 

    Stay active 

    Exercise releases lots of endorphins, which put you into a great mood. Not only that, but completing a tough workout gives you a sense of achievement, which also helps to beat low moods, anxiety, stress, and lethargy.  

    Spend time with friends 

    Good relationships are vital for maintaining good mental health. Friendships and connections to others can help you to build self-confidence and self-esteem, which are vital to well-being. They also provide you with a safe space to share positive experiences and access emotional support as and when you need it. To find new friends, join a local club or start a hobby which will bring you into contact with people. Hit the gym and find a gym buddy or sign up for a new class to meet new people. 

    Maintaining good mental health has never been more important. With so many stressors in our everyday lives, it is essential to ensure that we are giving our minds and bodies the best chance of staying healthy and happy.
