Sat inconspicuously in the cultural quarter of Northampton, UK is Dapper Chaps; an alternative yet chilled barbershop for the modern gentlemen.
The hidden gem is the epitome of ‘man’, but not so much that female partners would feel uncomfortable being in. Quite the contrary in fact, as when I visited owner Gary Osbourne and his band of barbers, the atmosphere was one of relaxation with a down-to-earth vibe.
Having been open on The Derngate for 8 years, Dapper Chaps has nurtured a strong clientele of returning customers; eager for a great trim and equally great chat. Having only created their website a year ago, the guys have managed to create an air of exclusivity of the shop where most of the time, people only visit after great referrals. Tucked away in the basement of a smashing house nestled in the rather up-market part of town, Chaps has found a niche in their East London come LA style decor and furnishings.
The rather indie interior is matched perfectly with the exterior, both before and during your visit. What first caught my eye as I drove past was the tattoo-style inspired pin-up on the classic brickwork. With tattoos playing a large part of the #barberlife and #beardsandtattoos movement, it seems both fitting and awesome at the same time.
Artwork features heavily for Dapper Chaps, and can be seen throughout. Once you enter and have your trim, that doesn’t mean your Dapper Chaps experience ends, oh no! For outside there is a decked garden; perfect for a chat and maybe a smoke. But what else would make this great? A bar? Well, it’s got one of those too, and in fact sells craft beers and ales from local brewery, Maule Brewing Co., keeping the magic of small businesses alive.
Fans of Apothecary 87 beard oils and Uppercut Deluxe Pomades, these guys know their beardy products, and not only recommend but use these products too. You can be sure that these guys will take good care of you and your hair! With such an amazing vibe from a barbershop, there is so much potential at Dapper Chaps, and plans in the pipeline include building a shave bar and lounge upstairs. You can clearly see these guys believe in the #barberlife and what it means to be a barber and understanding their craft.
