Choose the right mask
The kind of mask you have on will go a long way in determining the kind of snorkeling experience you will have. For a beginner, especially, it may make you to never want to go snorkeling again or it may make it your favourite sport. Ensure therefore that while you are buying or renting the mask you try it on in order to determine if it fits properly. The straps should not be on too tight or too loose in order to prevent the mask from flooding. Moreover, ensure that the straps fit nicely at the back of the head and that they do not cut across the ears to avoid hurting yourself. Fit the snorkel onto the mask and try and inhale to determine whether everything is working properly. Alternatively, you can purchase a full face mask which is much easier and convenient to use especially if it is your first time.
Pay attention to the fins
While at the store, try the fins on. If they are too tight try and look for a different pair that fits snugly. On the other hand, do not rent or purchase fins that are loose as they will make it quite difficult for you to swim with ease. For a beginner, it is best to try on longer fins first as they will enable you to swim faster and will help you not to use too much effort to propel yourself.
Ensure you wear a snorkel vest
Snorkel vests are often underlooked when people are shopping for snorkeling gear. It is important that you have a look at them when shopping or renting your gear in readiness for a snorkeling trip. These vests can be of great help as they are meant to aid your buoyancy in case you are having difficulty remaining afloat or in the event that an accident occurs. Moreover, they can help keep you warm since deep waters tend to have low temperatures. The brightly coloured vests also help you to remain visible in the presence of any incoming boats. Do some research, therefore, before going snorkeling in order to identify which may be the best snorkel vest for beginners.
Take someone with you
Going out snorkeling for the first time may be a bit scary and some individuals may actually get quite nervous. On that first trip, it is, therefore advisable to go with a friend or with your family since having someone or people around snorkeling with you will go a long way in helping you relax and make you less afraid. Doing it with friends will make it seem like an exciting adventure, which it actually is. Alternatively, you may go with an expert or a guide who may help you in case of any difficulties.
Choose your location and time wisely
For a great snorkeling experience, you have to be someplace where there is a lot of marine life that you can actually see and enjoy. Marine life, is, after all, one of the main reasons as to why we go snorkeling in the first place. Check out some travel advisories and do research on the best spots for snorkeling. As for time, be sure to go out when there aren’t any waves. This will make it a lot easier to navigate, especially since it is your first time.
